Watch sunscreen block UV light transmission.

WATCH THE VIDEO

Theory

Sunscreen protects the skin by absorbing the damaging UV light emitted from the sun.

Apparatus

  • Sunscreen (spray variety)
  • UV Light
  • White Paper
  • Clear Plastic Sheet (optional, but makes less mess)
  • Tonic Water

Procedure

  • Place white paper on table and cover it with the clear plastic sheet.
  • Spray sunscreen in a few places on the sheet, covering areas of the paper
  • Under visible light, the sprayed areas look unchanged
  • Turn off the lights and shine UV light on the area
  • Under UV, the white paper will show brightly blue.  But areas covered with the sunscreen spray will be dark.
